Inequality, Infections, and Community-Based Healthcare
January 2005
Evan Lyon, M.D. and Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D
This piece was published in the winter 2005 edition of the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics. The journal edition was meant to celebrate the Journal's 5th anniversary with a series of pieces on innovation in healthcare. We focused on the community-based aspects of our work in rural Haiti - including Zanmi Lasante's unique stability during the February 2004 coup that removed Jean Bertrand Aristide from power for a second time.

I completed this piece during the summer of 2004, a summer that brought incredible suffering in Haiti in the form of floods and continued violence surrounding the coup d'etat that was completed in February 2004. The title is a dedication to our patients in the Central Plateau and what they must endure in search of better health.
